A study of stomach contents of Cory's shearwater, Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) (Aves: Procellariidae), from the Macaronesian Islands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Clarke, M.R..
Data are presented on the diet of Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) resulting from stomach investigations based on 18 birds from Hierro (Canary Islands), 5 from Selvagem Grande (Selvagens or Salvage Islands), 2 from São Miguel and 1 from São Jorge (Azores), collected between 1977 and 1981. These data confirm the general idea that this shearwater feeds principally on fish and squid. The glandular stomachs of 9 birds from Hierro contained significant quantities of food, varying in wet weight from ca. 4-40 gm; in four cases more or less complete squids were present, all Ommastrephes bartrami (Le Sueur, 1821). In addition, the gizzards of all 26 birds, except one, contained fragments of squid beaks belonging to 12 species. Several of...

Bird observations in the Selvagens Islands (21-23 October 1978 and 27 May-7 June 1981) [CANCAP-Project] Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Norrevang, A.; Zino, P.A..
In the frame work of the CANCAP-Project of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, The Netherlands, the Salvage Islands were visited twice: in 1978 (October 21-23) and 1980 (May 26-June 7), respectively. Bird observations were made on both occassions.

Lobophora (Dictyotales) Species Richness, Ecology and Biogeography Across the North ‐ Eastern Atlantic Archipelagos and Description of Two New Species 1 ArchiMer
Vieira, Christophe; Henriques, Filipe; D'Hondt, Sofie; Neto, Ana; Almada, Carmen H.; Kaufmann, Manfred; Sansón, Marta; Sangil, Carlos; Clerck, Olivier De.
The brown alga Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) is an important macroalga in the North‐eastern Atlantic archipelagos (i.e., Macaronesia). Notably in the Canaries it can dominate benthic assemblages. While the genus has been the subject of several ecological studies in the Canaries, no study has yet been conducted to assess species‐level diversity of Lobophora in Macaronesia. We reassessed the diversity of Lobophora in Macaronesia, reporting the presence of seven species (L. caboverdeana sp. nov., L. canariensis, L. dagamae sp. nov., L. delicata, L. dispersa, L. littlerorum, and L. schneideri). Lobophora spp. from Macaronesia are morphologically and ecologically distinguishable. In the Canaries, L. schneideri dominates the photophilic assemblages from...

Macaronesian Pycnogonida Naturalis
Stock, J.H..
Thirty-two species of Pycnogonida are recorded from the region enclosed by the Azores, Cape Verde Islands and Mauritania, in depths between 0 and 3100 m. Of these, four are new: Eurycyde diacantha, Achelia tenuipes, Achelia turba, and Nymphon curvidens. The ranges of nine species are enlarged.

Mycale species (Porifera: Poecilosclerida) of Northwest Africa and the Macaronesian Islands Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Beglinger, E.J.; Voogd, N.J. de.
Based on collections assembled by Dutch expeditions to the Northwest African region, including the offshore islands in the neighbouring Atlantic, a taxonomic monograph of sponges of the genus Mycale is presented. Additional material from the region borrowed from the Zoologisk Museum of the University of Copenhagen and incidental samples made by individual collectors were also included. The combined collections contained sixteen species, nine of which are new to science: Mycale (Aegogropila) syringosimilis spec. nov., Mycale (Aegogropila) tenerifensis spec. nov., Mycale (Arenochalina) africamucosa spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) atropha spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) guineensis spec. nov., Mycale (Naviculina) cruzi spec. nov., Mycale (Paresperella) janvermeuleni...

Phylogeography, genetic diversity and structure of the poecilosclerid sponge Phorbas fictitius at oceanic islands Naturalis
Xavier, J.R.; Soest, R.W.M. van; Breeuwer, J.A.J.; Martins, A.M.F.; Menken, S.B.J..
In this study we assessed the sequence variation in the I3-M11 partition of the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) in ten populations of the Atlanto-Mediterranean demosponge Phorbas fictitius (Porifera: Poecilosclerida) at two spatial scales: a regional scale comparing mainland (Iberian) and insular (Macaronesian) populations, and a local (Archipelagic) scale focusing on different island populations of the Azores archipelago. A multiple approach combining diversity measures, FST estimates, phylogenetic inference and nested clade phylogeographic analysis was used to assess the genetic structure and elucidate the evolutionary history of this species. Genetic differentiation, based of FST estimates, was found among most populations at both scales...

Sharpening the species boundaries in the Cladonia mediterranea complex (Cladoniaceae, Ascomycota) Naturalis
Pino-Bodas, R.; Pérez-Vargas, I.; Stenroos, S.; Ahti, T.; Burgaz, A.R..
The complex Cladonia mediterranea belongs to the section Impexae and is formed by C. azorica, C. macaronesica and C. mediterranea. These species are basically distributed in the Mediterranean and Macaronesian Regions. In the present work the limits between the species of this complex are re-examined. To this end, the morphological characters were studied along with the secondary metabolites and the DNA sequences from three loci (ITS rDNA, IGS rDNA and rpb2). The morphological data were studied by principal component analysis (PCA), while the DNA sequences were analyzed using several approaches available to delimit species: genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition, species tree (BEAST* and spedeSTEM) and cohesion species recognition. In...
